We have been lucky to have known Mr Lam, both as our daughter’s school teacher and later on as her tutor as well. He was one of the most inspirational teachers our daughter has ever had, as he was the one that made her fall in love with Biology; for that, we will always be most grateful to him. Fast forward a couple of years, while Mr Lam worked at a different school, I tracked him down and he tutored our daughter online for her GCSEs, filling gaps and making up for substandard teaching by other teachers. Despite a heavy workload of 12 GCSEs, our daughter achieved 9s in both Biology and Chemistry, in just a few months, and that was because of Mr Lam.
I knew that Mr Lam worked his magic when he was our daughter’s teacher at school. But as her online tutor, I got to see for myself all the different aspects of what made him such a great person. From my daughter’s perspective, he was a great teacher that helped her learn and achieve her best. From my perspective as a parent, I noticed and appreciated other things as well. First of all, Mr Lam cares so much about his students and for them to learn, that he prepares his own very high quality materials (power points and booklets) to supplement his teaching. In my book, supplemental materials created by a teacher shows that he is hard working, he knows the subject matter well, and he cares to make a difference for his students. In addition, he was always very generous with his time. He always made a point to have a friendly conversation with our daughter at the start of every online session, while extending the lesson’s time accordingly, which I appreciated after having other tutors do the exact opposite.
Mr Lam is one of those rare teachers that has it all. He is inspirational, he is smart, he is caring, he is fair, he truly loves teaching and he is hard working. As a result, his students have the best success in their exams, but most importantly are inspired by him and love learning. He sets the bar high for all teachers, I cannot recommend him enough!
